Summer 1910, Slack Bay in northern France. Mysterious disappearances are causing a stir in the region. The unlikely Inspector Machin and his astute Malfoy (mis)lead the investigation. They find themselves, despite themselves, at the heart of a strange and consuming love story between Ma Loute, the eldest son of a family of fishermen with very particular customs, and Billie of the Van Peteghem family, wealthy and decadent bourgeois from Lille.
